G20 Protest - Pittsburgh Pa. - September 2009

Saturday, January 12, 2013

As lawmakers from Connecticut to California rush to propose new restrictions on firearms and ammunition, state-level gun-rights activists are playing defense for the first time in years, with some saying they face fights they may not win.

“Our backs are against the wall,”  said Scott Wilson, president of the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, a pro-gun rights group. “We are in for the fight of our lives. I have never seen anything like it.”

In a blog post after the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., the CCDL admitted to its members that efforts to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines could succeed, despite their strident opposition.

The CCDL message said that “we simply do not know” whether they would be “successful in our efforts to protect us from bans on certain firearms or magazines.”

As the White House formulates a list of federal proposals to combat gun violence, with recommendations from Vice President Joe Biden’s task force expected by Tuesday, lawmakers at the state level are forging ahead to restrict the sale or possession of certain types of firearms and ammunition.

In New Jersey, 18 new bills have been submitted to the state legislature, including one that would require gun buyers to submit to a psychological evaluation, according to the Star-Ledger.

In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo called on legislators to pass the nation’s toughest ban on assault weapons and restrictions on high-capacity magazines.

In California, which already has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, Sen. Leland Yee, a Democrat, said he intends to introduce a bill requiring gun owners to register annually, and another requiring all guns to be kept in lock boxes when not in use.

In Connecticut, Democratic Sen. Beth Bye wants to limit access to assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and require that firearms be registered by model and serial number, Reuters reported. Bye also wants to impose a 50 percent sales tax on ammunition and magazines.

In Colorado, Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, received a standing ovation from some state legislators Thursday when he suggested requiring universal background checks on all gun sales.

Gun Safety Protest Group

With so many lawmakers vowing action, gun rights groups say they face a stronger tide of public opinion and political pressure than ever before.

“I think they’re going to pass a ban on semi-automatic rifles unless we stop them,”  said Dudley Brown, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, a Colorado-based organization. “There is a zenith of activism that we are clearly reaching right now.”

RMGO is currently running a drawing on its website to win an AR-15 – the same model of rifle police have said was used by alleged Aurora shooter James Holmes and Newtown gunman Adam Lanza.

“RMGO is facing dozens of battles in the Colorado legislature this year, so we need to increase the size of our pro-gun army,” the group says on its site. “To do that, we’re giving away a free Colt AR-15 Model 6920 donated by our good friends at Jensen Arms in Loveland, CO.”

In New York, the Shooters Committee on Political Education, a gun advocacy group, struck a similar tone in a message to its membership.

“Your participation is no guarantee that we will win this important fight to protect your Constitutional rights, but we can say with certainty that anything short of overwhelming our legislators with calls, emails and letters we have virtually no chance,” SCOPE told members on its website.

“We will do everything we can to preserve our constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and how that turns out is anybody’s guess,”  SCOPE head Budd Schroeder said.

Saying that the National Rifle Association is too willing to compromise with gun-control advocates, 22 state and 5 national pro-gun groups have coalesced in recent weeks to form the National Coalition to Stop the Gun Ban. Among the national groups involved is Gun Owners of America, which claims a membership of 300,000.

The coalition formed out of a desire to stand against new regulations on guns, according to Charles Heller, spokesman for the Arizona Citizens Defense League.

Arizona became an epicenter of the gun control debate in 2011 after Representative Gabrielle Giffords sustained a point-blank shot to the head as a gunman turned a Tucson supermarket parking lot into a shooting gallery, killing 6. Giffords and her husband announced a new national campaign on Tuesday to “prevent gun violence” and “protect responsible gun ownership.”

Heller characterized renewed calls for gun control as an overly emotional response to the shootings in Arizona, Connecticut, Wisconsin, and elsewhere.

“It’s going to be a very pivotal moment if we can’t get people to stop emoting and start reasoning,”  Heller said. “They’ve been waiting for a long time for the perfect crisis. They tried to light the fire with the Batman shooting, and they’re looking for the perfect victims to dance in the blood of so they can get something done.”

Heller’s AZCDL was among the 27 signatories of an open letter the coalition addressed to members of Congress asking them to not pass new legislation banning certain firearms and magazines, or requiring background checks on private gun sales.

“Members of Congress who support gun control by any means, procedural or substantive, will be targeted for defeat by coalition members,” the letter reads.

No Compromise

Tensions among pro-gun activists are running just as high in states where legislators have remained quiet on new measures, said Paul Valone, president of Grass Roots North Carolina.

“The coalition members have all agreed on a ‘no compromise’ approach on this issue,”  Valone said. “It needs to die. Period.”

In an open letter to President Barack Obama, Valone speculated that some gun owners may use violent force to resist government attempts to confiscate assault weapons.

“The real question, Mr. President, is whether you so hunger for power that you are willing to foment what might be the next American Revolution,”  Valone wrote.

In the meantime, anxiety among hardline pro-gun rights advocates may be swelling the ranks of activist groups. The NRA told Politico that its membership grew by 100,000 in the 18 days after the shooting in Newtown.

“We can’t take applications for membership as fast as people are sending them to us,”  said Heller. His group currently has about 7,500 members. He expects that number to grow to 10,000 over the next year. “People in Arizona are, they are just absolutely not going to give up a gun.”  (Sources: Matthew DeLuca, )

  1. Terry says:

In a normal, SANE United States of America, the old checks and balances system would prevail and citizens would decide – through their respective legislators – what they did and did not want to be law. That process is no longer the status quo…. BHO now issues “executive orders” at a whim that can change everything.. no lawmakers needed.

You can’t expect rational behavior from irrational people…

  2. Terry says:

You better believe this is all about control. This has been planned for a very long time. America, the beacon of hope for the world – the last bastion of freedom – must be changed into the military “enforcement arm” of the new world order. There is no doubt about this. It is happening right now. Americans have been lied to…

When new ultra-deadly biological agents were created we were told that it was imperative that we create these horrible things in case the “bad guys” do. When we started shooting billions upon billions of watts of energy into the atmosphere through HAARP, we were told we had to control the weather in case the “bad guys” do too… Few Americans noticed when we started killing people using unmanned drones – controlled from thousands of miles away. We were told we had to perfect the killer UAV so we could get the “bad guys”.

All of these systems were tested on people on the other side of the world. Now they are about to be unleashed on Americans….. Will someone please explain to me exactly who the “bad guys” are..

I doubt many of you know the technology that has been snatched up by the military; “weaponized for your protection” – that is about to be used against you. Google GWIN towers or even better go to TRU- TV and watch the Jessie Ventura show on them.. “Targeted Individuals” is the title, as I recall. well, HERE

Listen to a CIA agent tell you what this is all about… Listen to the MIT graduate who worked for the same agency, the man who created this technology, tell you what is about to happen.

You know “Gun Control” is not about guns, it’s about control. And these people are going to find out they just attempted to saddle the meanest bronc in the desert. What happens when you back anything into a corner? It gets every bit as mean as it is possible for that critter to get. They’re about to find out just how big a mistake this is.

I was talking to a woman from Australia on a blog site. I had “bragged” about what all she had done. Bless her heart, she did give me an ear full. She wasn’t mean…she was very frustrated. Seems this has been “settled” a couple of times in Australia…and their leader keeps changing her mind!

  5. Terracer says:

Well thank you very much… you have more important things
to worry about, I can assure you.

Keep getting the word out..these are perilous times my friend!
You are doing a great job and I see a lot of people stopping by
and reading your stuff… that’s a good thing.

There is a reason you feel compelled to do know that

As for me.. I ain’t dead yet..I ain’t that easy to kill..

  6. Terracer says:

Don’t think for a minute that these one-worlders who have infiltrated our beloved country are going to play fair..or by the rules.. they won’t. They feel they are ABOVE them. This isn’t going to be pretty folks, I can assure you.

For those whom this latest gun grab may have been awakened to what is really going on, welcome! We are glad you are here and even happier that you are awake. You have missed alot. Please allow me to bring you up to speed.

First: you cannot trust the media. The networks are treasonous and are completely owned (literally and figuratively) by the ones behind this evil one world government agenda.. The lone source of truth is the internet. Yeah I know how backwards that sounds, thinking of the internet as a source of legitimate information. While it is true one can find some guy in Omaha who believes his rutabega is the second coming of Jimi Hendrix, you CAN find the good just have to know where to look. You made it HERE so you are on the right track..

The Oklahoma City Bombing was NOT the work of Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols alone, nor did a fertilizer bomb in a Ryder truck do all that damage. You can find the video that shows the fed bomb squad vehicle backing up in order to remove the second unexploded device found that morning. The purpose in this act of “domestic terrorism” was to pass the “Omnibus Terrorist Act”. A piece of legislation that eased the feds task of securing wire taps and contained other contained liberty stealing provisions. It was written a few months prior to the event but was not signed into law by our lawmakers who felt it went too far in taking away freedoms we all enjoy. Once the bombs (yes, bombS.. plural) went off, it all changed.

Ironically this is EXACTLY what happened with the Patriot Act a few years later. The difference was lawmakers had taken all the liberty stealing language OUT of the bill months prior to 911…..,and it STILL wouldn’t pass. Once the buildings collapsed and osama bin laden was tabbed as the culprit, the lawmaker’s patriotism was called into question and they passed it. What they didn’t realize … all but one lawmaker that is, is that Bush and Cheney had ADDED ALL THE EDITED PROVISIONS BACK INTO THE ACT before submitting it for a vote! The time stamp on the copy read three o’clock AM the previous morning.. Someone stayed up all night making sure we got the full effect of this mislabeled “Patriot Act”..

All of this is about their “new world order” which will usher in the Biblical END TIMES.. a central government, a central currency, and a central religion. And it won’t be GOD they demand we worship……

    just a few thoughts…..

The UK is overwhelmed with Muslims!!! What are they thinking!!! Australia DID have a handle on the Muslims but it got out of hand 3 times…they are losing ground. It will be idiocy to give up guns with the Muslims swarming in like roaches.

I expect to see more grand standing from the Obama administration i the form of “false flags” of children being hurt, etc.

I saw something yesterday or the day before that I must say….he seems to pull a stunt… then it backfires on him. There was a “tearful man” about the death of his child… a day later, there he was WITH HIS CHILD who had NOT been killed or even wounded!

    That happened today.

  13. upaces88 says:

I expect we’ll be seeing a lot of this in the headlines “as though it is the MAJORITY of AMERICAN”… IT IS NOT:

A blogger added up the deer license sales in just a handful of states and arrived at a striking
There were over 600,000 hunters this season in the state of Wisconsin .Allow me to restate that number: Over the last several months, Wisconsin’s hunters became the eighth largest army in the world. More men under arms than in Iran . More than France and Germany combined.

These men deployed to the woods of a single American state, Wisconsin, to hunt with firearms, and no one was killed.
That number pales in comparison to the 750,000 who hunted the woods of Pennsylvania and Michigan ‘s 700,000 hunters, all of whom have now returned home safely.
Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia and it literally establishes the fact
that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.
And then add in the total number of hunters in the other 46 states. It’s millions more.

The point? America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with that kind of home-grown
firepower.’s not just a way to fill the freezer..It’s a matter of national security.
That’s why all enemies, foreign and domestic, want to see us disarmed.

Food for thought, when next we consider gun control.Have A Great Day!
Overall it’s true,so if we disregard some assumptions that hunters don’t possess the same skills as soldiers, the question would still remain…what army of 2 million would want to face 30, 40, 50 million armed citizens.

    or confiscation of guns.

  14. jColes says:

Thanks! Glad to be here … the articles are always provocative. At the Federal level, BHO and his minions are pushing hard to create a foundation for eventual civilian disarmament, but because the House ‘Sophomore class’ is so hard line and no legislation can pass without them I predict major Federal legislative restraints on our rights will be still-born.

The states are a different matter but if Illinois couldn’t get the job done, I don’t see much prospect for success in imposing severe restrictions — and that the restrictions that do come along will not successfully withstand judicial scrutiny if our side aggressively pushes the case against them.
My greatest fears concerning our 2nd A rights lies in the future: BHO will most likely get to appoint at least SCOTUS Associate Justice within two years — possibly two before his term ends — and you know what kind of people he will nominate … Our only hope for defeating his judicial agenda is to have a successful 2014 off-year election in the Senate … 33 Senators will be up for re-election…we need 12 wins to ensure that BHO can’t ram any SCOTUS nominations through…

He wants our guns as he Arms the Muslim Brotherhood. Are you getting the hint at what is really going on?
Sometime in late January, as part of a 213 million dollar foreign aid package, the U.S. government intends to deliver 10 F-16 fighter jets and 200 Abrams tanks to Egypt. Quite a nice gesture on the part of the United States considering back in 2010, Mohamed Morsi, the current President of Egypt went on record labeling the U.S. an enemy and called for driving Israel from occupied Arab lands. Sounds like the kind of man I would allow to possess world class U.S. made weaponry.

I can’t imagine there is enough popular anti-gun sentiment that supports the kind of draconian legislative and potentially administrative actions described in the article. When this current wave of emotion passes and all is said and done, my guess is that some tweaks will be made to Federal and state gun regulations; but on the whole the gun-grab will fail as will most high-capacity magazine ban attempts.

Yes, NY, NJ & CA might do some crazy things with their state firearms regulations; and CT — where the grief is greatest — might harden their already insane gun laws; but on the whole I suspect this becomes a tempest in a teapot — and the leaders of the movement will have spent their political capital to get very little in return.

  19. upaces88 says:

My question is…be sure it is “public opinion” taking the guns away OR, if that what they are trying to make you think!?!!! IF the Public-at-large did more research they’d find that this is “A DELIBERATE attempt to get the guns away from American Citizens. It has NOTHING TO DO with Sandy Hook!

NRA Membership has Surged by 100,000 and this comes from the Huffington Post!

So, I would imagine, it is a great deal more than that!
